How hard is it to take the class "fundementals of oral communication?"?

I'm going back to school in fall 2010 and i'm a little nervous about taking a course called fundementals of oral communication. What am i suppose to expect going into this class? any advice/help would be appreciated. How hard is it to take the class "fundementals of oral communication?"?
This is probably a course in public speaking. You will learn to overcome any anxiety which you may have about doing this. You will learn how to write an organized speech and how to deliver it without having to read it out loud. How hard is it to take the class "fundementals of oral communication?"?
AKA Basic Oral Communication--this is the liberal arts requirement for communications that everyone has to take. My advice on taking the class is to take your assignments seriously and PREPARE for them. Most students who have a fear of this class will delay doing the preparation work and this only compounds their fear when they have to deliver in the classroom. The better prepared you are the better the class will go. It is always the people who failed to prepare that end up standing in front of the room much, much longer than the appointed time length allowed for the speech and grabber on and on and on. If you prepare for your topic this is one of the easiest classes you will ever take. Best of luck!

What is the difference between communication, speech, and language?

I obviously know the difference, I just can't really put it into words. Someone please help? It's a study question for my communication disorders class. I have an exam tomorrow :( these are the basics haha. What is the difference between communication, speech, and language?
Communication is any meaningful interchange of information : oral, visual, written, sign language, body language, facial expression, gestures, even pheromones ...

Speech is oral communication.

Language, in the case of human language, is a highly symbolic and culturally rich system of oral communication.

Start thinking about your future, men think more of here and now, because they don't have children and worry about the years of raising them so our brains are wired to suit our evolutionary paths (my opinion.)

So think of such subjects, where do you want to retire, what do you want to be doing with that spare time, which will clue you into her interests.

Take classes together make be cooking so that on your day off you may be able to cook dinner for her, whats her favorite dish, whats her biggest worry.

Just be yourself. Ask her about what she wants to do. Ask her out. See if there is anything you can do for her. See if she wants to go see a movie. Invite her to your house or go to hers and watch it.

The rituals we follow or discourses we hear now may not be the original version of what was thousands of years before. They might have attained different stages depending upon the region and people.Communication gap is still dominant even after so much of development of technology.Communication gap widens as it travels from person to person.Would religious messages have met the same fate?
There are so many reasons in addition to communication gap.The rituals advocated thousands years back may not be valid today since attitude and culture of the people underwent a lot of changes.Religious teachings ,concepts, ideas, vision could not be properly interpreted by the present day head of the religious organisation since they are not well versed in the langu ages in which they were told.Communication gap widens as it travels from person to person.Would religious messages have met the same fate?

I would like to work in an embassy in the middle east. What field under communications would be the best? I dont have a certain interest in a specific one. Is interpersonal communication good? or is corporate better?Im interested in getting a degree in communications what is the best field to get into under communication?
    Some Information is below.

What kind of Data is considered in such communication?

Data Communications is the transfer of data or information between a source and a receiver. The source transmits the data and the receiver receives it. The actual generation of the information is not part of Data Communications nor is the resulting action of the information at the receiver. Data Communication is interested in the transfer of data, the method of transfer and the preservation of the data during the transfer process.

In Local Area Networks, we are interested in "connectivity", connecting computers together to share resources. Even though the computers can have different disk operating systems, languages, cabling and locations, they still can communicate to one another and share resources.

The purpose of Data Communications is to provide the rules and regulations that allow computers with different disk operating systems, languages, cabling and locations to share resources. The rules and regulations are called protocols and standards in Data Communications. What kind of Data is considered in such communication?

Why should there be good communication skills in a marriage and what would happen if there isn't good communication skillsWhy is communication a key thing in a marriage?
If there isn't good communication between the husband and wife, then there will be a LOT of misunderstanding.

Men think differently than women do, and vice versa. Also, throw emotions into the mix and you have a deadly mixture unless the two talk it out with each other (not to be confused with arguing). Why is communication a key thing in a marriage?
Communication is vital in any relationship. Marriage, work, sports, entertainment, family, friends, etc. all need to convey information or feelings. Without communication, how would you know what others think, need, want, or feel? How can you do your job, if your boss doesn't tell you what your job is? How can you marry someone, if you don't if they love you? How can a team know what formation to make if the coach doesn't direct them? How can a comedian make people laugh without telling a joke?

Where to find Intelligent Writing and Communication?

I am studying for the MCAT and as of right now what gives me the most problems is the verbal section. I know that if I read more magazines or websites with intelligent writing and communication then I will hopefully improve my score. Where can I find these though? I read The Economist, which is interesting, but I want more things like that. Basically, where can I find intelligent writing and communication, basically people's opinions, in magazines and websites besides The Economist?Where to find Intelligent Writing and Communication?
Drew, I've got my wife here. She is in medical school and of course had to study for the MCAT. I've asked her your question. Her response is as follows:

"Don't spend a lot of time reading. Spend most of your time answering questions that would be on the verbal section. Get a Kaplan course book that would have those questions in it. The same goes for the other sections as well. Spend half of your time studying and half of your time answering board style questions. And time yourself taking practice tests, because there is a time limit per section."

As you can see she didn't put much value on that, but I remember she was reading the Wall Street Journal. You might want to think about the New Yorker Magazine as well.

I really enjoy reading Discover magazine. They cover a large variety of subjects, and many of their articles are very in-depth about subjects that range from dark matter to tectonics. I love that there is such a diversity of articles on topics like archeology, biology, sociology, paleontology, and countless more. There is a monthly interview of an expert on the cutting edge of some breaking discovery, and a monthly article by a medical professional detailing the diagnosis and treatment of some really unusual cases. Very fascinating reading!

What books are good for the study of non-verbal communication?

I am currently studying non-verbal communication. have read a few books including "the Definitive Book of Body Language" and "Body Language for Dummies". I wanted a few other good books to help further my studies.

One unanswered question that I have is what the differences in perception of someone who uses open body language and someone who uses dominant and controlling gestures. I know that both are useable during certain social settings. A book that discusses this would be great. What books are good for the study of non-verbal communication?
"Communicational structure: Analysis of a psychotherapy transaction" by Albert Scheflen, MD. Bloomington, Indiana: 1973.

In 378 pages the author examines the communications structures in a 30 minute family therapy session. Almost all the commentary is on non-verbals, and almost nothing about words spoken. One of the co-therapists conducting the session is Dr. Carl Whitaker, Univ. of Wisconsin, Madison, one of the GREAT family therapists of our time! You will find this book fascinating if you can find a copy of it...

"Pragmatics of Human Communication" by Paul Watzlawick, Don Jackson, and Janet Beavin (based on the work of Greg Bateson, one of the great family theorists of our time and once the husband of Margaret Mead, anthropologist, who wrote "Coming of Age in Samoa"). An absolutely important book (again if you can find it).

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Watzla鈥?/a>

In case you don't get around to the Wiki article, here's something really important from it:

"Watzlawick defines five (5) basic axioms in his theory on communication that are necessary to have a functioning communication between two individuals:

" (1) One Cannot Not Communicate

" (2) Every communication has a content and relationship aspect such that the latter classifies the former and is therefore a metacommunication.

" (3) The nature of a relationship is dependent on the punctuation of the partners communication procedures.

" (4) Both the talker and the receiver of information structure the communication flow differently and therefore interpret their own behaviour during communicating as merely a reaction on the other's behaviour.

"(5) Human communication involves both digital and analog modalities: Communication [involves] non-verbal and analog-verbal communication.

" (6) Inter-human communication procedures are either symmetric or complementary, depending on whether the relationship of the partners is based on differences or parity."

(Hmmmm...that's six, but Wiki says five...oh well.)

This book had the greatest effect of any in the mid-century on the entire field of communications theory and practice.

Interestingly, although Watzlawick studied Jung and the others were of various theoretical backgrounds...much of what is said or implied in this book is reflected in the writings and psychological concepts of Dr. Alfred Adler (1870-1937). http://www.lifecourseinstitute.com

It sounds to me like you're looking for more of a psychology textbook or an academic database. I know that public libraries and even post-secondary colleges, if you have a library card at these places, pay to subscribe to academic databases. Contact your library and find out how to log onto their academic sites. I did that with my local library. You could pay to have access to many well-known academic databases yourself, but why do that if you can get the same info for free? Call your local college or university as well. They may subscribe to different ones than the library.

That's my answer. You can research all kinds of psychology journals, and look for your answer in one of those.

    Good luck!

Has anyone thought about using professional help to improve your communication skills?

A friend of mine is on the executive track and hopes to be a Vice President of the large highly successful organization he is working for. He has decided to hire a professional image consultant and couch to work on his appearance, communication skills, political skills, and approach. It is not cheap but he thinks it will work in the end because hard work and technical knowledge alone is not going to get him ahead in today's competitive world.

What would you think of hiring a professional executive coach if you were moving into senior management?

Has anyone thought about using professional help to improve your communication skills?
Although I don't work in a managerial field or executive field...or for that matter an office, I think, based on my understandings and attitude, that this would be a good idea. Increasingly, more and more emphasis is being placed on appearance and how well you can "sell yourself" - I've been repeatedly told how vital that capacity to sell yourself truly is. It's more seen as a "requirement" to have the knowledge and skills - and the ability to project that and demonstrate it, and the professional appearance are becoming the keys to really scraping further across the line.

I think in such a position too, the training would be useful in his actual job...a lot of demand would be placed on effective communication, political correctness and the appropriate approach - right from the get-go, the chiefs would want to see his ability to do that. Might be an extreme example, but if you have a highly talented and intelligent individual but he has all the tact of a pitbull and swears like a wharfie, he won't get through. Some time ago, for sure, but now days - no way.

I've had a degree of communication and leadership training in my roles.

One of my two (paid) roles is as a pilot and flying instructor. Right from low level general aviation up to the airlines, there is ENORMOUS emphasis on communication and appearance...so much is weighted on these, both in the interview and initial stages and in day to day work. As a flying instructor too, effective communication is vital - there's no point in me knowing my theory inside out and flying like an ace if I can't actually teach it and communicate that information to my students. So, a lot of my training for that role was similar to the above. It's probably a different slant to business communication coaching, but it's a similar thread.

Also, I'm a team leader in the Fire %26amp; Rescue service...and in this role (I was only recently promoted), effective communication is critical. I've been taught a lot of the above - communication, politics and the like - a lot of it is so I can face and deal with the media at an incident if I need - and so in that role, can project a professional image of the service to the public if I go on TV or am quoted in a newspaper.

At the same time, I need professionalism and leadership to be able to do my role and maintain team confidence - so people feel safe working with me and under my guidance. My firefighting and technical rescue skills let me do the job at hand - but now that I'm in a leaders role, my portfolio has had to be expanded out to image as well...

So basically to sum up, I think it's a good idea. 20 years ago, I'd have not bothered - but the modern world has such emphasis based on appearance, I believe that at the least it will give him an important edge and at most, be vital to such a role.

He conducted a 1-day workshop that covered not only verbal communication skills, but also body language, mannerisms, facial expressions %26amp; tone. His training seminar also touched on the ways that different personality types respond when speaking and processing their thoughts before responding to verbal prompts. Communication and human interaction is SO MUCH MORE involved than just a persons words. Can someone explain the ways in which each of these messages are communicated (upward, downward, etc.) within the various areas of the criminal justice system?

What is the difference between noise and distortion in communication?

It is about communication engineering. What is the difference between noise and distortion in communication?
Well, noise is noise, and distortion is when your signal is so strong that the measuring or recording device cannot handle it all, and it's waveform is sheared... when you turn up the 'gain' on a guitair amp, you are amplifying the signal, and the speaker can only respond to a certain magnitude of wave.. i dunno, though,What is the difference between noise and distortion in communication?
Noise is just unwanted modulation. Distortion is when the signal you receive is, well, distorted.

Think of the traffic reporter sounding like he's beating on his chest while he talks from a helicopter. That's distortion. The wind noise that's drowning him out is noise. What is the difference between noise and distortion in communication?
noise is the unwanted signal that gets superimposed wit the information signal..distortion may b termed as the cause of the failure of the circuitary used which disturbs the regular pattern ...it may lead to a deviation an the signal but its not external like noise
Noise is defined as any signal that is unwanted. If you are transmitting a pure 1kHz tone for example, then at the receiver anything other than that 1kHz tone is considered noise. The term noise typically refers to signals with random fluctuations in amplitude with respect to time in general.

If however, the communication channel or any part of the transmitter/receiver circuitry is non-linear, then the shape of the signal will change from being a pure sinusoidal 1kHz tone being transmitted in this case. Any such change in the shape of the waveform essentially means that the signal is no longer pure but has additional frequency components (called harmonics). This is called distortion of a signal.

In this context, formal communication would be emails, memos, etc. that are are distributed to employees or information communicated in meetings, etc. "Official" communication that is distributed through the organization based on a heirarchy (the district manager passes a memo out to all of the store managers to give to their employees, or the employee passes information up to their boss in a weekly status report).

Informal communication would be any other type of communication - a boss stopping you in the hall and saying "hey, could you do this?", or employees talking to eachother, etc.

Why is communication different amongst different cultures?

What are some key communication competencies/abilities needed to communicate more effectively with people who are culturally different from you?

This is a question i need to answer for a class. I am not asking the question to use someones answer, I am just interested in other peoples thoughts (besides classmates) on the matter. Why is communication different amongst different cultures?
Peoples underlying thoughts are more or less the same, so some psychic ability is useful. Of course not many people are psychic, so you need to make do with body language cues. If you have a level of empathy, that's also helpful.

Information about communication problems during the Civil War?

i have an essay due on the civil war next week ; %26amp; i need extra information to go with how there were communication problems during the Civil War, and examples please?

this is what i have so far :

"A movement of troops over the river have taken place, and the trains from the city going east have been stopped. Telegraph lines and railroads were at the hands of the government."

help pleasee ? anything would be greatly appreciated ; best answer gets 5 stars %26amp; 10 pointss .Information about communication problems during the Civil War?
First, the communications quality varied greatly depending on who had control of the territory whatever message had to cross to get to the recipient. As an example, when Grant finally took Vicksburg he couldn't send a wire from there, because the telegraph lines would have been ripped down probably as fast as they were put up by roving bands of enemy cavalry. His wire to the government in Washington letting them know that Vicksburg had fallen had to travel via the Navy up the Mississippi to Memphis, then be put on the wire to Washington.

The problem of communication was acute also for any general on the field of battle. Almost without exception if a force cut, or even came close to cutting his lines of communication and supply it forced him to retreat.

Second the telegraph wire was easy to "tap". General J.E.B. Stuart had a telegraph specialist on staff so that he could read the Yankee messages. In one case he actually complained to the Yankee quartermaster of the "bad quality of the mules lately furnished which interfered seriously with our moving the captured wagons", after capturing a Yankee wagon train.Information about communication problems during the Civil War?

What model could I make to represent the usage of maths in communication? How can I represent that maths is used in communication with help of a model?
OK in digital communication a checksum is used to ensure the integrity of the binary bits sent say from a computer to a peripheral or vice versa. A cyclic redundancy check CRC uses a more sophisticated nth degree polynomial alogorithm to test the integrity of the code, and can depending on the degree of the polynomial used guarantee integrity to within 2^n bits etc.

For secure transmission of data encoding and decoding information uses the prime factors of a v large number such that these factors cannot be worked out even by computers in 'polynomial time'

These are examples, but how you would demonstr8 them using electronic circuits..haven't a clue! How can I represent that maths is used in communication with help of a model?

What is the difference between Information Technology and Information Communication Technology?

Thanks! What is the difference between Information Technology and Information Communication Technology?
the difference is the word communication!! lol really they are kind of similar IT obviously all-sorts like design implementation of computer based technologies, where as ITC is more concerned with the communication techniques used such as telephone, adsl, cabe, fibre-optic, phones, transporting communications, mobile technology, wireless, 3G, quad band etc but even though there is quite a huge difference there is also a huge connection and over-lapping of the 2 subjects especially where computer based technologies design and developments are concerned, if u go into studying either subjects at a higher level such as graduate level u will find the clarification of each subject will become very clear and apparent. hop that kind of helps u xxx

    Communication?

me and my girlfriend are having a little bit of trouble communicating and what does it even mean by communitcating anyway, just like talk or what can someone give me advice on how 2 communicate with my girlfriend better and tell me exactly what communticating in a relationship means, in my eyes it means fixing problems and talking alotCommunication?
Communication has many parts. Part one is speaking. You have to talk to her without getting upset, without blaming her, and without making her feel bad. Let her know how you HONESTLY feel. Don't hide your feelings. Don't keep all you feelings inside until you explode with anger.

Part 2: Listening. Be a good listener. Be attentive to what she wants. Many times when a girl is having a bad day she doesn't want you to fix the problem, she just wants someone to listen. Let her vent, but always comfort her.

Part 3: Feedback. If you just sit there and listen to her without giving any signs that you are listening then it will be more worse than if you weren't there for her at all.

But most importantly is honesty and the ability to have an open communication without pride or judgment. Usually, guys are good talkers and the women are the good listeners, but with practice you will be able to learn what she expects from you.

I suggest going to amazon.com and getting a book on communication and actually apply what you learn.

    Good luck!Communication?
Communication in a realtionship means asking any questions you have on your mind and being really open about everything. It doesn't mean that you have to share everything, but share yout thoughts and feelings. Anything that's on your mind, ask and be open about it. Just don't keep things to yourself so that you're always questioning yourself about her. Talk through the problems with open minds.Communication?
Its not just talking but always being able to communicate with the other in all kinds of different ways. In order to have good communication you both need to learn patience how to listen and when its best to speak or remain silent.
Just talking about everyday things. If you can't talk to each other, you have nothing.

What is the best topic to work for my master thesis in Electrical Engineering, in communication and control?

There is a very important point. First you have to be admitted to a graduate school. Then you need to find a thesis advisor with whom you are compatible in an area of interest. That is, your choice is somewhat limited by what is available in the graduate school you attend. Furthermore, the master's thesis is not very important. It is a stepping stone to a PhD dissertation that teaches you how to write more than anything else. What is the best topic to work for my master thesis in Electrical Engineering, in communication and control?
Control Engineering is a great topic to be studied. It has the wide analytical systems approach from household materials with electronics used to aircraft which basically has the advantage in part of engineering studies.

Communication : Communication Studies and Media Studies are interdisciplinary approaches to relational communication and mass media. Scholars from various fields have contributed to our understanding of communication. Our department and our field are characterized by this combination of approaches. In some ways, the study of communication is very much like the social sciences (anthropology and sociology in particular) and psychology (although we're more concerned with what happens between us than what happens inside us). In other ways, communication is like the humanities when it looks at rhetoric, semiotics, and history. There's even a natural sciences influence in our understanding of human behavior as a function of genetic makeup and evolutionary patterns

If you don't have one you can either make up a story and send a phony sample or tell him that you do not currently have such an e-mail, because you don't usually resolve such issues by e-mail. Then you can ask him if you can write a communication sample now, for a hypothetical situation and send it to him.

What does a person need more than communication?

Excluding, air, water, food, shelter, and clothes, what do you think is most important to the human race? Communication is my answer. What does a person need more than communication?
I do not know what single factor inherent to life is more important than all others to the human race. Communication and the possibility of negotiation are important.

Along with communication or inherent to communication, individual persons may need an acknowledgement of their personal pride with the feeling of being something acceptable and worth, with the ardent hope of getting promoted, with the feeling of not being seen as some weird and hostile creature just dumped down on Earth from the planet Mars.

An individual person may be shouting out loud "let me participate the way that I am; I am willing to improve, but please do not exclude me, do not send me out into cold nothingness if I cannot improve", thus communicating the need of some corroborative acceptance.

There is no overall human race, there are particular human races of individual beings all struggling for survival and for life-space for their own material and ethereal unfolding.

For the individual person it may be of utmost importance to be allowed to witness the world, to be allowed to be friendly present and to learn something, to be allowed to participate and to proudly interact in the encounter.

When negotiation and generous recognition are possible, a necessary and peaceful cohesion among human beings is important for their survival, for their unfolding.

For the individual person it may be of utmost importance to be chosen, to be promoted, to be allowed the dream of a material and ethereal future.

  • What is the relationship between a strong vocabulary and good communication skills?

Most jobs require someone with good communication skills. Can one have excellent communication skills with an average vocabulary? What is the relationship between a strong vocabulary and good communication skills?
I would argue that it is easier to have good communication skills with an average vocabulary. If you don't know how to talk loquaciously (or with big words), it is harder to talk above others (who may feel you are just trying to make them feel less intelligent than you). What is more important than knowing big words is knowing how to use the "small" words that you do know properly. Learn proper grammar, and you will do much better with communication. Also, learning how to speak (using body language, speaking loudly enough for all that you want to hear to hear what you are saying, proper posture) will go a long way toward making you look intelligent without making you look arrogant (which is the biggest problem facing those who know words like loquacious).

If you still feel you would prefer using "big" words, make sure you know how to use them properly. No one wants to look like Mike Tyson after his prison stint, in which he had learned how to say the words but not their meaning. "I don't know if I'm estatic or ludicrous," sounds rather foolish, don't you think. Stick with what you know, but make sure you know it and you'll do very well (not good) as a speaker.

What is the difference between language and communication?

in what ways is a gesture such as pointing like language? in what ways is it different? even infants can communicate. what is the benefit of learning language vs. continuing to use the more primitive forms of communication? What is the difference between language and communication?
The question you asked begs an answer about which entire books can -- and have -- been written. So I'll try to keep my answer relatively short.

In my opinion, a simple gesture like pointing is not properly language. Language is a *system* of communication designed for clarity and specificity. Pointing may be a universal indicator, but it leaves extreme ambiguity in the intent of communication. It is situation. If you and I are standing in a room and I point to a computer, you might have no idea what I'm saying. If I point past you, and you look behind and see a charging bull, the communique is much clearer. But it's situational. Language is built as a system for specificity. (Think about sign language, which is far more than just gestures.)

The issue becomes a little tricky because if there is a bull charging behind you and I only shout "Hey! Look!" you may not known where to look (behind you) and dodge out of the way, even though I've used "language." This is one reason to learn language: if we learn a fuller system with more vocabulary, we can better communicate our thoughts. ("Look out behind you! Dodge the bull!") Sometimes more primitive communication will work, and can be similar to language in that information is transferred between parties. But without some sort of system, or language, clarity and specificity are hard to come by.What is the difference between language and communication?
Communication is simply conveying a thought between two or more people. It can be visual, gestural, oral, or by sound (touch as in the case of Helen Keller). Language is a specific form of communication where letters, figures, numbers, characters, gestures, or combination thereof (spoken ,visual or both) is universally accepted by a culture or sub culture to easily facilitate common ideas, expressions, and thoughts. Pointing is a language is cases of ASL.

What is the definition of Neural Communication?

Why is describing it as "an electrochemical process" an appropriate label? Would it be possible for this communication to be effective with only chemical or electrical components? What is the definition of Neural Communication?
Neural Communication i a population of physically interconnected neurons or a group of disparate neurons whose inputs or signalling targets define a recognizable circuit. Communication between neurons often involves an electrochemical process. The interface through which they interact with surrounding neurons usually consists of several dendrites (input connections), which are connected via synapses to other neurons, and one axon (output connection). If the sum of the input signals surpasses a certain threshold, the neuron sends an action potential (AP) at the axon hillock and transmits this electrical signal along the axon. What is the definition of Neural Communication?

I'm giving you my understanding, very non-technical as I'm not even close to expert on this. I have, however, used wi-fi, infrared and bluetooth. I think they are all basically the same thing--compact "radios" to transmit and redeive signals from a home wireless network, from a telephone or pda, etc. Basic difference is frequency of communication and some are much faster than others.

What type of technology is available to help a student with a communication disorder?

It could be either a device or software. If you could provide a website that would be even better. I am doing some research on communication disorders and this information would be really helpful. What type of technology is available to help a student with a communication disorder?
It depends on the communication disorder and what it is due to. If the student is unable to speak then an alternative has to be found. This can range from a pen and notebook if the student can write, a small computer (ie PDA, Mini laptop) with speech software, to a device which speaks for the person.

If understanding is the issue you probably need to make things more visual. The most common method of extra visual information is writing followed by pictures. There is a good set of pictures called boardmaker or compic which are line drawings to represent different words, actions, etc. Boardmaker is software and is usually used on the "speaking" devices aswell as with programs which allow someone who uses them to write and talk using a computer.

There are many companies who make devices which "speak" which are called AC (Alternative and Augmentative Communication) Devices. A really good one I've found is Dynavox although there are others.
Something I forgot to say about boardmaker and pic's originally is that you can print them off and put them on boards, walls, etc and also give the person so they can use them to communicate. Basically it is something which can be high or low tech.

What type of technology is available to help a student with a communication disorder?
PECS - picture exchange communication system is fantastic for helping children with communication difficulties - you can create PECS using a software called 'inclusive writer'. Also theres a big MAC which is like a big button with a voice recorder inside - at my school the teacher will record their voice saying good morning or something and all the child has to do is press the button (if they are unable to communicate).
Look under AAC devices . There are many and range from no tech to high tech.

This website offers links to many, many vendors.

"Boardmaker" software by Meyer-Johnson is the most often used these days to support non-verbal communication. It utilizes pictures symbols.

What is the Best Wireless Communication for Monitoring household water usage?

We wanted to create a prepaid water system in which we would be sending data in a high data rate (maybe 1 per minute) to the Main system, we are preparing this to be implemented to thousands of homes. we thought that the best solution is the GSM although we have to pay the provider network. I actually wanted to know what are your thoughts about wireless communication. we also wanted it to be more install-able and doesn't require that much devices to be added to each household.

Thanks in advance! What is the Best Wireless Communication for Monitoring household water usage?
You may want to consider a Zigbee network node for each home and a central GSM node every few dozen (or possibly more) houses to communicate with the main system. Zigbee has the advantage of "self-healing" if it is disrupted. What is the Best Wireless Communication for Monitoring household water usage?

How can I improve my communication skills?

I am currently in a relationship with someone where communication is not possible. The biggest obstacle is what ever the initial subject may be it is always detoured into another subject that pops up in the middle of conversation for example: "why are you talking to me like a 4 year old? Why do you always use the word always? Why are you getting so worked up?" After all, of the detours, the initial subject is forgotten and nothing gets resolved. I am actively seeking ways to prevent this from continuing. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. How can I improve my communication skills?
this is a blocking technique called distraction, the only way it can work is for you to follow a cycle of conversation that is predictable.

try this: start your communication with a solution or goal. for example, "I would really like to feel closer to you and i know you would agree we could have a great relationship.

as a conversation starter it is disarming and shows you are not just trying to pick a fight or criticize( by the way, ensure that you are not), it proves an interest in improving your relationship.

then think about the problem, now think about how you contribute to that problem. so next you would say, " I know that when ........ happens i do not respond very well,(or what ever is appropriate as your behavioural contribution), I will try hard not to do that anymore and would like us to.......

In this you are aknowledging that no one person is responsible for a problem in a relationship and it takes two to fix it.

then you try: "is there a way we can manage this differently that will make us both happier?

here you are not telling your partner what to do but are in effect building a team mentality that you are both working toward something.

communication breaks down when we feel we have a right to criticize someone for not doing what we want or not doing something the way we want it done. the aim here is to have a non combative conversation to learn how to discuss a problem without the need to put your partner down in any way.

think about how you initiate conversations and what you employ to get your way. think about whether you are looking for a solution or just venting. think about how much you love that person before you start, why would you want to hurt or make someone you love defensive? think about how you can be loving and still get results.
    read out loud!!!!

that helps you be more fluent and increase not only your vocabulary, but phrases you can use once in a while. and if you don't know the word yet, look at the meaning and figure out a way of how to use it in a sentence, and why not, in a friendly conversation. (do it with someone else if possible)

    and about repeated words...

look at the thesaurus, it will help you to use alternative words instead of those that you constantly use.How can I improve my communication skills?
If they try to interupt you like that just ignore it or say "let me finish my point" Don't get distracted by obstacles because they're probably trying to make you forget so you aren't mad at them anymore.
Have you told to the other person this observation you are describing here?. May be he/she doesn't realize about what is doing, because it is likely unconscious mechanism of her/his mind. How can I improve my communication skills?

Where can i buy communication flash cards for a toddler?

My son is behind on his speech and we use communication flash cards with his therapist to help him. They are pictures on a card exp: ball, car, milk, snack, bath and he pick one off a board to tell us what he wants. Looking mostly for a web site i could order something like this from. I don't have a program either to do this so if you know of a good one that would help to.Where can i buy communication flash cards for a toddler?
Go Through Magazines and cut out pictures, or take pictures of your son doing those things. Paste them on 3"x5" cards, and put magnets on the back for the fridge, esp. for foods. At our local Headstart, we make books showing a child doing the 'right things' - sharing, helping, being nice with the books and toys, raising his hand- a little off the subject, but the children love to look at pictures of themselves.

This can be a fun activity to do together. "Help me find a CAR" or "This dog looks like Fluffy" You get the idea.

I also Love http://first-school.ws/. They have all sorts of printables and downloads. For as little a $8, you can access daycareresource.com, which has all sorts of activities for young children. Of Course, there's always E-bay for flashcards and games. Good Luck and God Bless.

What is the difference between electrical and chemical in terms of communication of Neurons?

This is for my neuro psy class. Neural Communication

    Within neurons:electrical (generation and conduction)

    and between neurons: chemical (transmission)

can someone explain these please???What is the difference between electrical and chemical in terms of communication of Neurons?
Chemical is the process of releasing a hormone in order to communicate. Electrical is sending an electric current to send the message. What is the difference between electrical and chemical in terms of communication of Neurons?
Impulses are passed down the neuron using an electrical impulse. This impulse is generated in the dendrites and passes down the axon to the axon terminals. In the axon terminals it becomes a chemical messenger. The axons terminals release the chemical messenger (the neurotransmitters) into the synaptic cleft. The are transmitted to the dendrites of the next neuron, where the neurotransmitters become an electrical impulse and the whole thing starts over again. What is the difference between electrical and chemical in terms of communication of Neurons?

How to have better communication skills with my boyfriend?

we have been together for almost 2 yrs. Our relationship skills suck. I want them to get better but how? what can I do? I've heard that communication is the key to a good relationship :)

and another thing. we've been arguing a lot lately, is a little break from eachother good?

I just want things to work out.How to have better communication skills with my boyfriend?
Well, I've been with my bf for 6 years, and its really hard to keep it up at times, especially when you fight a lot and don't talk to each other. What are you having trouble talking about? With me its sex, and I'm recently trying to fix it, but its so embarrassing. Say to yourself that you love each other, and he won't judge you for what you say, (at least he shouldn't.) Start with something small, and maybe tell him that you want to talk and explain how you feel like your having a communication block, and want to discuss things more. And if you can't talk to each other about some things, that in itself can lead to arguments. Money is another big issue. Try to work it out one problem at a time. Good luck! How to have better communication skills with my boyfriend?
ok this is coming from a guy "i was in a relationship for a good 8 months but the number 1 thing that caused it to die was horrible communication skills. if one of u feels like the other needs to give more of something in some area or one of u isn't feeling loved by the other, something i would suggest is to have a system of checks and balances where perhaps maybe once a week u guys sit down together and discuss things that are on ur mind that u want to work on with each other that's something i never did but wished to it would have had a better outcome

    - scott (on friend's account)How to have better communication skills with my boyfriend?
your right communication is key. just tell him that you want to talk to him and share with him what you think. or maybe take a break and think it through
We chicks tend to be too emotional and we think way too much and over analyze every single thing he does. Try to avoid this. Pick your battles. Sometimes you just have to roll your eyes and walk off.

Chances are when you are having conflict with someone, usually both parties are at some type of fault. Maybe one more than the other but usually they are both causing the "problem" whatever it may be. Even though you feel you didn't "start it" it doesn't really matter at that point who it started it, it's a problem and it needs fixed so focus on that. As far as communicating goes, remember you are both looking at the situation from two very different perspectives. Try and see his side to it as well. If you find some fault of your own then you'll most likely be less mad at him because suddenly it goes from "It's all your fault you jerk" to "Wait, I can see why you felt that way because of what I said or did" or whatever.

Remember when talking that you give the other person a chance to talk and tell their side. Even if you don't agree, even if you think it's stupid, just listen and usually you can tell what the problem really is. If it is an issue of hurt feelings, just apologize and say you didn't mean to hurt him, it doesn't matter if you think he is being a big baby. If he is hurt, then it's your job to fix it and vice versa.

Most of the time communication is hard because people are angry and underneath that anger lies hurt. If you can bot realize that underneath all that giant anger is just measly old hurt, it seems less threatening.

When you are talking taking deep breathes. Don't raise your voice. Be patient and listen all the way through before interrupting their thought. Try not to say "You're wrong!!!!" because he thinks your wrong so that's not gonna get you anywhere. Try yo understand his side and ask him to try and understand yours. Meet in the middle.

  • Are proper spelling, grammar, and sentence structure important to effective written communication?

I have long held the belief that the writer has a responsibility to effectively communicate what he/she intends; and that spelling, grammar, and sentence structure are part of that responsibility. In the last decade, however, it seems people simply do not care about the quality of their writing. It seems that today鈥檚 writers, of either formal or informal communication, are not concerned with how their writing is perceived. Should we simply give up and accept that it's the reader's responsibility to figure out what the writer is trying to say? Or should we hold people (especially our children, their teachers, and public figures) accountable by correcting them? Are proper spelling, grammar, and sentence structure important to effective written communication?
Communication skills simply do not refer to the way in which we communicate with another person. It includes many other things - the way in which we respond to the person we are speaking, body gestures including the facial ones, pitch and tone of our voice and a lot of other things. And the importance of communication skills is not just limited to the management world, since effective communication skills are now required in each and every aspect of our life.

Yes. Its is very important to be specific in Communication.

As we know that each word has two different meanings. So being correct and being specific helps the other person to communicate.

I have a line i.e. You Cannot Not Communicate. It means that whether you interact or not you are always communicating.

You can also watch videos on the same by visiting the following link. Are proper spelling, grammar, and sentence structure important to effective written communication?
I strongly recommend against correcting other people. After my many years, I am ever more convinced that developing the ability to communicate effectively involves strengthening listening skills.

Having said that, I agree that it is our responsibility to utilize (not just use) the most effective conventions of syntax, semantics, punctuation, that we know how, and that it is our responsibility to improve our knowledge and utilization of those conventions.

    Why?

    1) The better our mastery of language utilization, the more clearly we think.

    2) The better our master of language utilization, the more clearly we convey our thoughts and feelings.

Many people perceive your efforts to discipline you communication skills. If they are sufficiently wise to realize the need for them to do the same, then your efforts are a "word to the wise." People who do not care will not care any more if you correct them, but they will resent your attempts to "improve" them.

I feel like I'm getting the proper communication with my agent whats the norm on these things. What is the usual communication between a client and real estate agent? Is it daily, once a week?
Depends on the situation. If you are in the middle of a transaction and there is a lot going on then anyway from a couple of times a day to every couple of days would be acceptable. If not much is going on then I think weekly or every 2 week updates are appropriate.

But definitely if you call or email your agent I think it is appropriate to expect a response within a few business hours. What is the usual communication between a client and real estate agent? Is it daily, once a week?
how close are you to buying something? If your window shopping it might take a week, if you into looking because you need to buy now. the Agent would be a fool to let you go somewhere else to get good service. Also have you heard you can get an agent of your own by paying a small fee. Usually $1000 extra.

Some ideas if i were you I would think of a time that you showed leadership, in any way shape or form in the community, home, school, friends, anywhere. Then i would compare that to a women in history that showed great leadership. You could look up women who took a stand for equal rights and so on. Using both to write your essay would be effective communication.

What are the communication barriers for apraxia sufferers?

This is for health and social care and I'm very stuck on what the barriers to communication are because so far I've only got the fact they can't speak...

Thanks :)What are the communication barriers for apraxia sufferers?
People with apraxia have difficulty getting their words out. Its called a motor planning disorder, and it's where the signals sent to the person's mouth by the brain get jumbled up. The muscles in the person's mouth are fine, but the signal going to the brain is not telling the muscles how to move to speak correctly. It can impair speech to make it less intelligible, some people have such severe apraxia that they can't speak at all. Since they have problems with their speech, they may withdraw and not talk to others, it may cause behavior problems in children. With adults, many stroke victims will have apraxia, which can cause them to become depressed as it is hard for them to get their words out.

  • What type of communication is used in railways?

hi ppl ! jus want to know the type of communication system used by the railways. . . i mean, the driver is able to contact the next station constantly but mobile phone users suffer tower prob on the go and find it very difficult to make a call. if they both emply RF waves, what is the difference ?What type of communication is used in railways?
i know the engineer has at least analog channels in the 160.s and i dont if it is digital but the maintance can reach a very long way.

im not sure of the tech difference but i think the more critical info is digital or phone. What type of communication is used in railways?
There's a few things happening here.

Don't compare cell phone users to commercial radio installations. They are different animals. (Better performing cell phones help overcome the problems.) Cell phones talk to the nearest cell site, that's how the system is designed to work. When a person travels out of one site and into the next the one cell drops and the next picks up. If the person travels quickly the system sometimes cannot determine which cell you are in quickly enough and calls get dropped. Metal structures block radio signals. So a passenger inside a metal rail car will have difficulty getting reliable signals.

The radios used by the railway are much higher power, with antennas mounted on top the train. They cover much greater distances than a cell phone.

Beyond that there are sensors along the railway that trigger switching equipment. This equipment is connected with a sort of telephone circuit to monitoring facilities. The status of the sensors and switches can be monitored at centralized locations. What type of communication is used in railways?
    Radio...

Why is communication an important skill for health professionals ?

and what are the consequences of good and poor communication? Why is communication an important skill for health professionals ?
I once did an essay on this for my Academy of Health Careers.

Communication is the BIGGEST skill you need to be in the health profession. Why?

Think about what would happen if you were working in a hospital and you had a patient come into the ER who was suffering a life threatening situation. He's only got roughly 20 minutes for you to stop a hemorrhage (severe bleeding) The only problem is: He speaks Portuguese.

He's trying to tell you what exactly happen, but you don't understand. Minutes are ticking by. Do you have a translator on duty?

This is not just an important skill in the medical field, but in any profession.

Put yourself in this situation: You're a captain of a bomb squad. You've been called to deactivate a bomb that could explode and demolish 10 blocks. You're trusting your partner on the other side of your headset to provide you with the correct information about the device. Do you clip the red wire? The blue? The green? If he were to hesitate for even a second, or to start to tell you the wrong color, you're in danger as well as thousands of people.

It may seem like a very big exaggeration, but you've always got to think of little things in a bigger picture, because the little things may seem very insignificant.

Without communication, you cannot help the patient. A lot of times, in the health care profession, time is off the essence... so you must make sure that you have a clear line of communication as to avoid any unnecessary obstacles. Why is communication an important skill for health professionals ?
History is 80% of patient care. Diagnosing a patient depends on asking the right questions. Scans can only get you so far, and you need a history in order to even know which scans you need. Patients don't tend to volunteer everything that's important--they don't necessarily know what's relevant and what isn't. Here's an example.

What the patient tells you: "My abdomen hurts"

What this could mean: pretty much anything.

Someone with good communication skills asks when it started, what they've been eating, when they had a bowel movement, (if the patient is a woman) if they could be pregnant, where exactly it hurts, what the pain feels like, if they have been nauseous or dizzy lately, if they are having any trouble breathing, if their chest/back/neck/jaw/legs/pelvis/head hurts, what they've eaten recently, if they take any prescription drugs, if they take any recreational drugs, if they have done anything to make the pain better, if anything relieves it or makes it worse....

Someone with poor communication skills: palpates the abdomen to see if it's rigid.

The person with communication skills never even touched the patient, but they have already considered appendicitis, ovarian cysts, abdominal aortic rupture, ectopic pregnancy, drug overdose, bowel obstruction, possible cardiac implications, and more.

The person without communication skills has considered internal bleeding.

Let's say the person has a burst appendix. From the history, the communicative healthcare professional figures it out first. The one who didn't ask the right questions will waste their time with all types of scans, wasting precious time.
