What is informal and formal communication?

it is important that quality information is traveling through any organization, both on a formal communication channel, and informal basis. How is the communication channel in your organization? What systems are in place that function as a filter, or what could be done to make the process better?What is informal and formal communication?
In this context, formal communication would be emails, memos, etc. that are are distributed to employees or information communicated in meetings, etc. "Official" communication that is distributed through the organization based on a heirarchy (the district manager passes a memo out to all of the store managers to give to their employees, or the employee passes information up to their boss in a weekly status report).



Informal communication would be any other type of communication - a boss stopping you in the hall and saying "hey, could you do this?", or employees talking to eachother, etc.
